Health Exams & Vaccinations

On your first visit it is important to inform us about your pet’s lifestyle (e.g. indoor vs outdoor, contact with other animals, exposure to ticks and fleas, diet, exercise, etc.). This will allow us to tailor preventive health strategies to your pet’s unique lifestyle. Some routine care may not require an appointment with a veterinarian. We offer veterinary technician appointments for nail trims, anal gland expression and other routine treatments.

    Preventive Health Care

Your pet is a member of your family. Their care should be as good as the care that you receive. An annual check-up should be more than a quick glance and a few shots. We will take a thorough history and conduct laboratory tests to determine your pet’s health risks. We will then come up with a treatment plan or provide counseling to prevent illness. Regular physical examinations and vaccinations are only part of this process. Fecal exams, blood tests, nutrition and body condition analysis are also fundamental components. We will teach you how to become an active participant in your pet’s health care. You may have as much or as little involvement as you desire. For example, we can teach you how to measure your diabetic pet’s blood glucose at home where it is most accurate. We can also develop alternative strategies that are easier for you.

    Surgery

We recommend that your pet be spayed or neutered when they are around six months of age. Our fully equipped surgical suite will provide them with the most advanced surgical care for planned or emergency surgery. We always recommend pre-anesthetic blood work to determine if your pet has any pre-existing conditions that may be a risk during surgery or anesthesia. During anesthesia we will monitor its heart, breathing, body temperature and blood oxygen concentration. We will also provide the appropriate pain medication and antibiotics if necessary.

The surgical area will be shaved (the hair will grow back) and we will tell you afterwards if the stitches are dissolving or non-dissolving, in which case you’ll have to come back so we can remove them.

    Dental Care

Dental care is as important for your pet as it is for you! We advise pet owners to start brushing their pet’s teeth daily from a very young age with a small soft brush and a special tooth paste made for animals. Dental disease can severely impact your pet’s quality of life. In addition to oral pain and tooth loss, dental disease can lead to life threatening illnesses. Bad breath and oral cavity disease may be signs of other illnesses. If your pet has dental disease we may recommend a professional cleaning and thorough examination of their mouth under anesthesia. Dental x-rays may be needed to detect problems below the gum line. Loose or diseased teeth may require surgical removal.

    Laser Therapy

For many, the word “laser” evokes an image of an intense light beam that can generate a lot of heat and cut things. Photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT) uses a different type of laser that can be of great help by promoting healing, and reducing inflammation and pain. When your dog or cat is uncomfortable or in pain, alleviating their distress is more important than anything. Photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT) or laser therapy for pets is a painless, noninvasive, and easy way to do this. Laser therapy has been scientifically proven to be successful in treating post-surgical pain and many acute and chronic conditions.
